Of Life and Newton's Laws

I have seen the real life example of Newton's law and the inability of people to change. 

Newton's first law states  - A body at rest stays at rest, and a body in motion stays in motion, unless it is acted on by an external force.

This also proves that people are reluctant to change. Even when they know whatever they have to do, whatever is right is before them, even if it stares in their face they dont want to change due to percieved problems or sometimes just because of laziness.  

Now what is the role of the person who  tries to bring about the change or has lot of stake in the change? 

He should observe the reason for which the people are not willing to change - 

Is it because of laziness?

If that is the reason then the change maker has to take the first step even without the consent of all the people who he is trying to change and people will follow suit. Again according the Newton's first law, people will continue to be in the state of rest or motion  unless they are acted upon by an external force. So as the changemakers force will be acting on him and he will be able to see the good results and as the people are just unwilling to change because of laziness but because of no other reason, no body will get emotionally hurt and the change can be achieved. 

Is it because of percieved problems that they might face? 

The change maker should try to explain and negate the issues or percieved problems they might raise. There are two types of problems that might arise. First, they may talk about real problems that might arise due to the change which they can see with their experience which the change maker is unable to see. Then the change maker can try to explain how those problems are immaterial in the current context or how they can be overcome in some way. Or he can explain that even though these problems might be encountered, the advantages hugely outweigh the small problems they might face, people might get convinced. Nextly there might be problem of value conflict, i.e people might value something different from the change maker, then it requires a paradigm shift from the part of the people who want to change. 

How to bring about such paradigm shifts? 

They best way such paradigm shifts can be created is by showing examples of people who have taken the changed path and show them that most of their percieved problems were not real but just that percieved... 

Sometimes such examples might not be readily available and they might still poke holes in the models that we try to show. Here is where it gets difficult... If the change maker is convinced that THE CHANGE IS THE ONLY WAY that the objective is achieved, then even if no body else comes with them, they should be able to proceed with their change. This involves some amount of emotional hurt to the changemaker as well as the people who are not ready to change, but as time progresses, the people will try to see that most of their percieved problems were not real and that whatever problems they might face can just be easily overcome. Then they start to change and everyone will change. But here a question comes to the change maker - 

1. Is that the only way to achieve the objective? 

2. Does realizing the objective warrant the hurt it gives to the people involved?

If the change maker is absolutely convinced about the affirmative answer for both the questions, he can proceed without the support of anyone to achieve their objective. 

If the change maker approaches the people to change without knowing the answers to these questions, then he might realize that he is getting the answers for any of these questions as 'NO', then he might be tempted to leave what he has started in the middle which will cause unnecessary emotional hurt to the people who were with the change maker supporting his change. Ofcourse, the change maker might not know the answers to both the questions before hand and he might realize them in the process of change. Then he should explain the position clearly to those who support him and ask the same questions to them and if they still get the affirmative answer then only proceed further or stop the change they are planning to bring. 

This underscores the need to think through before taking any decision and being convinced that THE THING  has to be done to get the required outcome, then only taking the plunge. When the change maker is convinced that it is the only solution and it warrants the emotional hurt it might give to all the people involved then it is easy to for him to navigate through it. 

This means that our energy shold be spent in things which you are thoroughly convinced that the change they envisaged is very good and it is the only way and there is no dropping in between. All the best..

Though I feel they are really right, it doesnt decrease the importance of love even a little bit...

If we really think about it, life is meaningless, yes we are born, somehow we produce some offspring and then we leave it. This is life in a nutshell. How bad it looks..? So it all boils down to the point of where anyone finds meaning in? Some people may find it in their work, only to realize that it was not worth it after some time, some people in keeping their parents happy until they realize that it doesnt automatically guarantee you happiness...

But I think if two people are in love, then it gives them a lot of meaning which can be rightly characterized as

Service Experiences - ICICI Bank

I had an interesting experience with ICICI bank.  It all started one day when they tried to make me a subscriber for their automatic bill pay service. They perstered me a lot of times saying that they provide a free bill pay option from my credit card to Airtel mobile. Though, I was paying my mobile bill from airtel website using ICICI credit card pretty easily, after they asked me lot of times to use that service I opted in for their service. They said it was absolutely free of cost and no charge but in my April card statement I got a charge for that for 100 rs. I called their customer care number and asked. They denied to refund it or cancel it saying that they sent a notice in November bill saying that the terms of using the automatic bill pay service were changed and I will be charged 100 anually for that.  I explained that though I didnt require that service, on their persistent pestering, I just accepted to try out their service which was free then and hence I dont want their services at all. I also argued that if there are changes to the terms and conditions then the existing customers should give explicit consent to that or they can choose to opt out. After arguing for sometime, a customer service executive called me and said that they are refunding my money and that my service will be deactivated. 

Though, they overzealously charged me for the service i never wanted, I was happy overall that atleast they were will to refund my money and the relationship thus strengthened. 

But the story didnt end there... After one month, a service person from ICICI bank calls. He asks me about the missed attempt of theirs to charge me for the automatic billing service. After explaining the whole situation to him, he asks if he can deduct the charge from my reward points... !!! I negated him and asked him how the two are related. One is a service I never wanted. Next is one which you promised, you will give me if I purchased with your card. i never asked for the reward points but that might have influenced me in choosing you as a my preffered card provider.  How can you go back on your promises? And how can you take advantage of the fact that I am already subscribed to a service and start charging for that service without taking my permission?? 

I understand the crunch banks are under. I understand the way the current credit card system might be unsustainable but that doesnt mean that you can run over your existing customers. Brainstorm a new business model, explain it to your customers, giving them to switch over to that or opt out. As I value my relation with ICICI bank, if I really feel that the bank requires to do what it is doing, I might as well switch over to your new policy but till then dont try to charge for free services or dont deduct from my reward points.

After The Elections - Omissions in Electoral Rolls

First two phases of elections are over and some other states are still to vote. 

As these elections were happening after the Mumbai attacks, there was a lot of awareness and people were in the mood to vote. But it seems Mumbai registered below 50% voting. While people lament the absent voter syndrome, people like Rajesh who worked hard to increase the awareness of the political process, couldnt vote because of his name not being there in the electoral rolls. Questions were asked if it is because his open support to BJP. I am not sure but I am far from satisfied in the preparations of electoral rolls.

The problems start with registering your name in electoral rolls. 

The process is so cumbersome. I had applied thrice to get my name enrolled in the rolls. Though some initiatives like Jaago Re have helped in making the process easy, there is a lot to be changed. 

I had to go to the registration office to give my application. I have applied twice online but there was no way to know the status of that.. The application was thoroughly unusable. They ask for username and password to search electoral rolls. Why? 

One of my friends, though unwell, but interested in voting had to scour three polling booths near her home only to find that she was unable to vote. But she has voted in the previous elections, even Rajesh Jain says that he has voted in all the past elections. How come their names were removed this time? Do we need to register again every election season? What a waste of time and resources. These things will frustrate us no end and make us loose interest in the whole process. 

Agreed they could have checked their name in the electoral rolls prior to the election day but what could they probably do if they found that their name was missing- they have to apply again and anyway they couldnt vote this time. 

How to solve this? I think it is high time the single national ID is introduced. It will make the multiple IDS redundant and making of the electoral rolls very easy. 

Loksatta advocates the use of Post Offices as the nodal agencies for preparation of electoral rolls. As post offices cover very small areas and the post man knows his area very well they can just verify if all the people belonging there are available for voting and update accordingly. Rather than people having to apply and being clueless about the whole process, this would ease the process very very much. As soon the address of a person changes, he should place a request for change in address, which the post man verifies and all the required records are updated, his name should be removed from the electoral rolls of the old constituency and updated in the new constituency. 

Before the election, once all the voters are allowed to inform about the ommissions and additions that need to be made and then after verification from the post office, these can be made. They can send mails to existing people to confirm their prescence in the constituency and if they dont confirm it their names are to be removed. This way everyone will know that their name exists in the list or not and they are not surprised on the election day. 

I think this change is not far considering the experience in this elections. If BJP comes to power in this elections, they have implementing national ID in their manifesto, hope they implement it and we have hassle free voting the next time.
